President’s Column:  December 2017

Greetings!  Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!  I am writing this just after our Annual Holiday Party and Cookie Exchange, after Thanksgiving and so I feel comfortable with those greetings.  I am quite the traditionalist, and for me, the holiday season does not begin until the day after Thanksgiving.

We had a great time at the party on Friday December 1st and I am only sorry more folks did not attend. But for those who did, we had fun.  Great camaraderie, good food, an in-room full bar for those wishing to partake, a dedicated service staff and, of course, the Manchester Singers.  This group of Manchester High School singers is a staple to start off the event. A tremendous vocal group of mostly juniors and a couple of seniors. Thank you, Tony Cookro for arranging their attendance.

Likewise after dinner our own Col Dick Calta, President-  Ohio Council of Chapters MOAA performed the installation of chapter officers for 2018.  As voted on at the October meeting, the Trustees: MG Dan Hahn, LTC Brad Harvey, LtCol Tom Harnden, along with Secretary LTC Bart Oldenburg, Treasurer LTC Dave Riegler, Second VP Maj Will Handrich, First VP CPT Don Bratton and myself as President for the second of my two year term. As I related in my comments, we have a terrific team to lead the chapter.

It was great to have LTC Larry Ashbaugh and wife, Jackie, present.  Larry pinned the 5 Star Levels of Excellence award on our chapter banner. This award was presented at the Biennial Convention at YARS in September.  Larry was not able to accept the award from LtGen Dana Atkins therefore the time was most fitting for him to attach it at the Party. The award was a reflection of his leadership.

Also at the meeting, I announced I had received an early Christmas present. Janet Oglesby volunteered to, once again, be Editor of The Briefing Board! Her time as Secretary of the Mahoning-Shenago Valley Chapter has come to an end and the convention has concluded. Thank you, Janet!!  Janet was also the force behind the Chapter Directory which was mailed to all members just prior to Thanksgiving.

Dues statements were mailed to those owing for 2018. New this year was the addition of ‘Directed Giving’ opportunities. Rather than raise dues above the annual $20, the Board in October determined the directed giving be used to assist in funding our supported donations toward: 1) ROTC/JROTC, 2) StandDown in Medina, Stark and Summit Counties and 3)Fisher House at Wade Park/Louis Stokes VA in Cleveland.  Fisher House Foundation is rated 4 Stars( the highest) by Charity Navigator. You may renew on-line through the chapter website (under the Administration tab) or by mailing a check to the chapter.

I look forward to 2018 and invite you to be sure and join us for all or as many of the meeting opportunities as you can. Please see the meeting announcements and calendar. Again, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Happy Holidays.
